Book of Possibilities

Last weekend, I watched the movie Last Holiday on the TNT network. The movie featured rappers Queen Latifah and LL cool J. The story was simple. Queen Latifah plays Georgia Bird, a homely sales clerk in the cooking section of a department store. LL is the object of her desire. Georgia is a great cook who longs to travel and get married. But her dreams stay locked away in her “Book of Possibilities.”

When a doctor informs Georgia that she only has a few weeks to live, she decides to open up her book of possibilities and make them realities. She quits her job, liquidates her IRA and checks into a $4,000 a night hotel. There she eats at the best restaurants, buys the best clothes and gets daily spa services. She goes bungee jumping and has the opportunity to cook with her favorite chef.

One of the hotel workers note: Georgia has an appetite for life. She says wants she wants, does what she wants. She lives on the edge.

Though the story is poorly written, badly acted and extremely predictable, the underlying theme is clear: live each day as if it was your Last.

If you could be anything you wanted, what you would be? If you could go anywhere you wanted, where would you go? If you could meet anyone you wanted, who would you meet?
Do you have the AUDACITY to pursue your dreams? What’s keeping you from becoming the person you want to be? Low self-esteem? Lack of confidence? Money? Fear?

What if this was your Last Holiday? Where is your book of possibilities? What are you waiting for? Open it up.

A Husband, This Year !

I can't be mad at Neenah Pickett.

The 42-year-old New Jersey-based media consultant got fed up with not having a man.
Her New Year's Resolution? Meet her husband.

Pickett wants to get married - this year !

The traditional ways of meeting a man just didn't seem to work anymore.
Pickett tried online dating but no sparks. She says she hasn't dated in a year.

"If you're putting yourself out there and not getting a response, try something different," Pickett said on Essence.com.

Pickett took matters in her own hand and tried something different. She created the website 52weeks2findhim.com to find her husband. She posted her profile, pictures and even has a questionnaire for potential mates to complete.

Since publishing her website, she's received more than 100 emails. She says some of the guys who responded are way too young - 22 - and a few were old enough to be her father.

But she already has dates lined up and who knows, she may be a MRS. by this time next year.

I think her idea is creative, unique and innovative.
Although I want to get married, I don't know if I'll go to these lengths to meet a mate. I'm not brave
enough to put myself out there.

But I know I'll have to "try something different" because what I'm doing now is not working.

What do you think of Pickett's idea?

32 pounds

I watched The Biggest Loser last night and one guy dropped 32 pounds in a week ! 32 pounds in a week !
Did you hear me? 32 pounds in a week !

Here's a clip of the young man who dropped all that weight. He's with his father.

But what are they doing? It took me nearly a year to lose 30 pounds on Weight Watchers and I've been able to keep all but 10 pounds off (I'm still trying to lose those last 10 pounds !)

I exercise nearly everyday. I (try) to eat right - lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc - at least during the week (gotta have my Sunday brunch). But I can barely lose 2 pounds in a week.

How did this guy lose 32 pounds in a week? I need to find out what they're doing over there at The Biggest Loser because I would love to lose 32 pounds in a week.

I think I'll write in to the show to get their secret.

News: The Sad, The Mean, The Funny

Okay, the sad news first.
Did you hear about the young man in
New Orleans who killed his 22-year-old son because
he didn't want to pay child support?

Danny Platt, 22, owed his estranged wife
$4,000 in back child support.
Instead of making payments, Platt found
it easier to just kill little 2-year-old Ja'Shawn.

Please read the entire story here.

Now to the mean stuff: Right-wing conservative columnist Ann Coulter is known
to be rude, disrespectful and just plain spiteful. Now she's dishing about Michelle Obama - calling the first lady's style a freakish imitation of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Read the New York Daily News' story here.

I have to end this post with something funny. During a New Year's Eve event comedian Katt Williams ripped into fellow comic and radio show host Steve Harvey. This story includes Williams' profanity-laced comments as well as a YouTube video clip of his performance. Please watch the clip. Hilarious.

It's 2009, I will...

You fill in the blank.

What are your goals?
Maybe eat better and exercise regularly? Stop procrastinating?
Volunteer more? Go back to school or take some classes?
Travel? Get a new job? Clear your home of the clutter?
Read more? Stop cursing? Manage your time better? Save more money
or just spend more wisely? Choose better romantic relationships?

What do you want to do this year?
